Free Comic Book Day

This Saturday, May 4th, is Free Comic Book Day! Free Comic Book Day occurs the first Saturday in May each year. The event first occurred in 2002. Now, over 2,300 comics shops worldwide distribute free comics annually. Diamond Comic Distributors, a major comic book distributor based in Maryland, ships comic books to participating retailers and publicizes the event online. Participating comic shops then give away the comics for free.

Free Comic Book Day is a great way to discover what types of comics interest you. A variety of publishers participate in the event, such as Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, DC Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, Marvel Comics, and Archie Comics. There are comics available for readers of all ages. Some fans like to cosplay as their favorite characters, and you may even be able to meet comic book creators at the event! Free Comic Book Day can also aid local comic shops in gaining new customers.

Some comic book shops place a limit on how many free comics you can take, depending on how many people are in the shop and how many comics the shop has. If you want to guarantee that the shop doesn’t run out of free comics, try to arrive early. Keep in mind that only certain comic books are free, but you can still purchase other merchandise from the store. It’s considerate to buy something if you stop by a shop for a free comic, because even though the comic books don’t cost you any money, the retailers that provide these comics still have to pay for them.

If you’re interested in getting your own free comic, visit the Free Comic Book Day store locator to find out which stores in you area are participating.
